Ohio State University 31 Navy 27 - Observations from an Olde Poolie

NAVY FOOTBALL 2009 No. 1 Observations from an Olde Poolie

September 5, 2009. Ohio State University 31 Navy 27. Wow!. What a game? Most of you Navy fans watched the game and those who couldn’t - missed an exciting game. Before over 105,000 Buckeye fans and a few Navy supporters on a beautiful but hot day in Columbus, Ohio, a gutty Navy team almost did the impossible. The Midshipmen were down 29 - 14 with six and a half minutes to play. They stopped OSU on fourth and two at their own 15 yard line. On first down QB Dobbs threw a perfect pass to SB (So.) Marcus Curry who raced 85 yards for a TD. Three and a half minutes later Navy scored again to close to 29 - 27. On a pass attempt for a two point conversion OSU intercepted and ran it back 99 yards for two points and the final 31 - 27 score.

Navy kicked off, and thanks to a blatant (uncalled) block to the back of Emmit Merchant, OSU ran the kick-off back to midfield. A penalty would have put OSU inside their ten. It took OSU six plays and a 38 yard pass to score after 2:23 minutes. OSU 7 Navy 0. The Midshipmen then answered with an 80 yard drive in 15 plays consuming almost 7 minutes. They completed one pass in the drive. OSU 7 Navy 7 with 5:43 left in the quarter. OSU responded with a 23 yard FG. OSU 10 Navy 7.

After OSU covered a Navy fumble near mid-field the Buckeyes scored on a 2 yard run by the QB. OSU 17 Navy 7. OSU kicked another FG with 55 seconds left in the half to take a 20 - 7 lead.

With ten minutes left in the third quarter Navy was pinned to their own one yard line after an OSU punt. The Midshipmen then made a tremendous 99 yard drive using 12 runs and three passes consuming almost 8 ½ minutes. They scored on a 16 yard pass to Curry. OSU 20 Navy 14. Early in the fourth quarter, after the kick-off, the Midshipmen forced OSU to kick a FG - a 52 yard try - that was good. OSU 23 Navy 14. On Navy’s next series, a pass receiver caught a pass then fumbled and OSU recovered on Navy’s 30. Three plays later the Buckeyes scored but missed the PAT. OSU 29 Navy 14. On their next possession Dobbs pass was intercepted and the Buckeyes had the ball at mid-field. On fourth and two at Navy’s 15 yard line OSU went for it but Navy’s defense stepped up and stopped them short. On first down Dobbs connected with Curry who went 85 yards for a TD. OSU 29 Navy 21 with 6:15 minutes to go. Thirty seconds later Emmet Merchant intercepted for the Midshipmen and ran it back to OSU’s 33. Five plays later Dobbs burst through a big hole up the middle and raced in for a 24 yard TD. OSU 29 Navy 27. With 2:33 on the clock Dobbs attempted a pass but OSU’s linebacker jumped in the way, intercepted and raced 99 yards for two points for OSU. OSU 31 Navy 27.

Two lost fumbles and two interceptions to one turn-over for the Buckeyes doomed Navy. A 52 yard FG by OSU also contributed to their win. Both teams had 19 first downs. Navy had 186 yards on the ground and were 9-13-1 for 156 through the air. OSU had 153 rushing and 210 passing. Dobbs carried the ball 18 times for 83 yards to lead Navy. Both Navy’s lines were out weighed by 40 pounds per man but the Midshipmen held their own. The Defense made some big plays but had trouble getting to the 6 - 6, 235 Lb QB for OSU.

Next Week: Louisiana Tech from Ruston, La. travels to Annapolis for a 3:30 pm game. The Bulldogs lost to Auburn 13 - 37. They were 8 - 5 last year and return 17 starters including the starting QB. They have a huge line and will be a tough opponent.

Army beat East Michigan 27 - 14. Air Force beat Nicholls State 72 - 0.

GO NAVY BEAT the BULLDOGS
