Observations from an Olde Poolie - Navy 13 Wake Forest 10

NAVY FOOTBALL No. 8. Observations from an Olde Poolie

October 24, 2009. Navy 13 Wake Forest 10 . On a cool rainy afternoon Navy's football team delivered a win for the rain drenched Homecoming crowd.

Kriss Proctor, making the first start of his career at quarterback, ran 40 yards for a touchdown with 11 minutes left in the third quarter to give the Navy Midshipmen a 13-10 win over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in a non-conference game played in heavy rain at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

Proctor stepped in for Ricky Dobbs, who was out with a knee injury. His touchdown run was the difference in the game as the Midshipmen (6-2) won their fifth straight.

Proctor, who had played in just one game prior to this week, carried 23 times for 89 yards. Vince Murray ran for 175 yards for the academy, which did not throw a pass all afternoon. Last year Navy opted for a similar attack versus SMU in rainy conditions as well, becoming the first FBS team since Ohio in 1997 to go an entire game without attempting a single pass.

Joe Buckley got Navy on the board with three minutes left in the first quarter with a 50-yard field goal. Jimmy Newman's 40-yard boot tied the game at 3-3 just over a minute into the second period before Buckley added a 41-yarder at the halfway mark that gave Navy a 6-3 halftime advantage.

Proctor's touchdown run extended Navy's lead to two scores.

Skinner hit Devon Brown with a 15-yard pass midway through the fourth period to cut Navy's lead to three points, but Wake Forest managed just one first down the rest of the way.

Despite the rain Navy, which entered the week ranked fifth in the nation in rushing with 279 ypg, rolled up 338 rushing yards and converted nine of 16 third-down opportunities.

Next Game: Temple

After losing their first two games Temple has won 5 games They are an improved team and are still smarting form Navy’s come -from behind overtime game last year. This could be another tight game.
