Death of a Classmate - Barry Bittner - 12th Co.


Barry Nicholas Bittner, (LTC, USMC, Ret.) passed away on May 28, 2011, after a valiant six year battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of 56 years to Sandra Bittner and the loving father of Sherri Bittner Krohl and her husband, Marty, Stephen Nicholas Bittner and his wife, Kimberly and Julie Bittner Ericksen and her husband, Jeffery. He was also the cherished grandfather of Stephen Nicholas Bittner, Jr. "Nick", David Austin Bittner, Gregory Stephen Ericksen and Devon Leigh Ericksen. He was predeceased by his brother Gregory Joel Bittner.

Barry was born on July 21, 1932 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania where he spent most of his childhood. He graduated from Bullis School in Potomac, Maryland in 1950, from the Naval Academy in 1954 and from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1972 with a master's degree in computer science. He then served in Vietnam where he was awarded the Bronze Star. In 1976 he retired from the Marine Corps and began working for Digital Equipment Corporation. Ten years later he joined Apple Computer as a Federal Account Manager. Barry retired from Apple in 2000 to begin teaching computer science at Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax, Virginia fulfilling a longtime desire to teach high school students. He taught at Paul VI until he retired in November of 2010.

Barry was a member of Truro Anglican Church in Fairfax, Virginia which he and Sandra have attended for the past 27 years.

A visitation will be held at Everly's Funeral Home at 10565 Main Street, Fairfax, Va. on Monday, June 6, 2011 between the hours of 6-8 p.m. The service will be at Truro Church at 10520 Main Street, Fairfax, Va, at 1p.m. on Tuesday, June 7, 2011.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to: Paul VI Catholic High School Computer Science Department, 10675 Fairfax Boulevard, Fairfax, VA 22030 in Memory of Barry Bittner.
