NAVY FOOTBALL2011.   No. 1                               Observations from an Olde Poolie

Sept. 4, 2011.  NAVY  40  DELAWARE  17.   On a hot (85 Deg. ) day  under misty skies before over
34,000 fans Navy's football team led by QB Kriss Proctor beat a very good Delaware team.
Olde Poolie was impressed by the  mostly inexperienced defense that only allowed one touchdown
before coach Niumatalolo put in the second and thrid teams with six minutes to go.

Delaware kicked off. Proctor lost a yard, gained six, then on third down broke through a big hole on
the left side, got some good down field blocks and scampered 75 yards for a TD.   Navy 7 Delaware 0.
Later Navy stared on their own 38 and marched 62 yards in nine plays using over 4 minutes.
They scored on slot back Santiago's 13 yard run.  The PAT was blocked.  Navy 13 Delaware 0 with over
two minutes left in the quarter.  In the second quarter, the Midshipmen had a good 73 yard drive
that consumed over eight minutes.  Jon Teague kicked a 36 yard FG to make it Navy 16 Delaware 0.
The Blue Hens then answered with their best drive of the day - an 80 yard trip to make it Navy 17
Delaware 7.   With 25 seconds left in the half, Jon Teague kicked a record 54 yard field
goal. He told Niumatalolo he could do it.   Navy 19 Delaware 7.

Second Half.   Navy stopped Delaware on their first possession then drove 78 yards with Proctor
scoring on a 27 yard run over the right side.  Navy 26 Delaware 7. The Blue Hens then got a 25 yard FG
to make it 26 - 10. early in the fourth quarter Navy needed  five plays to go 65 yards and score on
a one-yard plunge by Proctor. Navy 33 Delaware 10. Navy intercepted  and got the ball on Delaware's
37 yard line. On the sixth play Proctor found a wide-open Santiago in the end zone. Navy 40
Delaware 10 with 8:13 remaining. After Niumatalolo put in the second and third teams Delaware
got their second TD.   Final Navy 40 Delaware 17.

This was a very good start for Navy against a very good Delaware team. QB Proctor had a great
day - thanks to some excellent blocking. He gained 176 yards on 22 carries. FB Tiech had 65
yards on 14 carriers. Proctor was 4-7-1 for 46 yards passing.  Navy had 391 yards rushing in 59
carries. Freshman Beltran only punted once - a high arching 47 yarder. Navy was not called
for any penalties. Four sophomores started on defense  and did well as did some others
making their first starts. The defense played well.  A good win.
