NAVY FOOTBALL NO. 12                                   Observations frm an Olde Poolie

December 11, 2011. Before over 80,000 fans in FEDEX Field (Landover, Md, ), on a sunny blustery day (45 Deg but wind chill in the 30s); Navy won the 112th reindiction of the Army - Navy game 27 - 21.  Ten straight. The Midshipmen capitalized on three Cadet fumbles, made defensive stops at critical times, and Jon Teague kicked two crucial field goals in the fourth quarter to ensure the win.

After each team lost fumbles in the first quarter, Navy drove 26 yards in six plays  to lead 7 - 0. Each team punted, then Navy recovered another fumble and went 55 yards in 7 plays to lead 14 - 0 midway through the second quarter. Army answered with two good drives to tie the game 14 - 14 at the half.

Navy started the second half when FB Teich (who lobbied to return the kickoff)   returned the kickoff to the Army 47. Five plays later QB Proctor dove over for aTD.  Navy 21 Army 14. Army marched 73 yards to tie the game 21 - 21 with 9:45 left in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Navy drove to the Army two but a penalty pushed them back. Teague kicked a 22 yard FG. Navy 24 Army 21  Navy recoverd a fumble on the kickoff. This time Teague kicked a 44 yard FG (right down the middle) to give the Midshipmen a 27 - 21 lead with over ten minutes remaining. Army drove to the Navy 25 but a sack on second down by LB Warrick set them back.  On fourth and seven with 4:21 left Army decided to go for it. Again Warrick stopped the FB for a loss and the Midshipmen took over. Navy made two first downs then punted with 6 seconds left in the game.

This was a great Army - Navy game. Hard hitting and each team gave their best. Navy, which loss five games by a total of 11 points; made key plays yesterday. The young defense made stops at critical times, special;ty teams played much better and Jon Teague (who had a tough year)  was 3 - 3 on PATs and delivered two field goals when needed. He was playing in his 53rd game.
Army had 298 yards rushing, Navy had 296. Proctor was 1 - 3 for 13 yards passing. Proctor had 97 yards rushing and Teich had 93.

Next year. The 2012 schedule is challenging. Navy opens in Dublin, Ireland against Notre Dame then travels to  to Penn State. The Midshipmen will return six offensive players. Soph Trey Miller will probably be the starting QB.  On defence,  eight starters will return. If the offensive line can find three solid replacements the team should be OK. The defense  should be more experienced./
