NAVY 31 INDIANA 30

NAVY FOOTBALL 2012  N0. 7                                     Observations from an Olde Poolie
October 20, 2012. Navy  31  Indiana 30. On a great day for football in Annapolis with temps around 63 degrees under partly sunny skies before over 33,000 homecoming fans, Navy's football team came from nine points behind with 12 minutes left to score 10 points then a big interception to seal the win.  A BIG win over a Big Ten team for the first time since 1979.
Indiana (which gets plays off in less than 21 seconds using a no-huddle offense) needed 12 plays to score a field goal on their initial possession. The Hoosiers stopped Navy at the 50 then used 8 plays to score the first TD after 11 minutes. Ind. 10 Navy 0. QB Reynolds then led a 70 yard drive and scored on a 2 yard plunge early in the second quarter.  Ind. 10 Navy 7. Indiana had another drive of 72 yards and took the lead midway through the quarter 17 – 7. On their next possession Navy punted to the Indiana 15. On second down Soph. LB Drake picked off a pass and raved 24 yards into the end zone.  Indiana 17 Navy 14 with three minutes left in the half Indiana moved into Navy territory and kicked a 23 yard field goal at the buzzer to lead 20 – 14.
Second half. After each team punted Navy had a 79 yard drive in 11 plays and 5 minutes wth SB Staten scoring on a nifty 17 yard run.  Navy 21 Indiana 20. The Hoosiers answered with a 30 yard field goal to go ahead 23 – 21. Navy punted from midfield in their next possession and the Hoosiers drove 80 yards in eight plays to make it Ind. 30 Navy 21 with 12:18 left in the game. Reynolds then led Navy on a 74 yard drive to the Indiana one. On fourth and one Coach Niumatalolo  opted for a field goal. Ind. 30 Navy 24 with 5:30 remaining. The defense stepped up forcing  three plays and a punt.  With 4:48 left the Midshipmen started on their own 28. A 15 yard pass to Green plus a 25 yard run by Green were key plays as Navy moved to the Indiana four. On third and goal, Reynolds faked a hand-off, scampered to his right then passed to a wide-open WR Aiken in the end zone. Sloan's kick was true. Navy 31 Indiana 30 with 2:02 remaining. Navy kicked off to the 20. On second down Soph. DB Gaines leaped and made an interception. The Midshipmen kneeled down to run out the clock.
This was a complete team effort. Indiana is improving. Their fast paced offense was difficult to defend. Two interceptions by Navy's defense were paramount. Plebe Reynolds continues to exude confidence. Senior SB Bo Snelson was Offensive MVP as he threw several key blocks allowing Gee Gee Green and others to make good yardage. Navy did not turn the ball over while getting two interceptions. They were penalized twice for 10 yards. Reynolds was 8-13-0 for 96 yards passing. Green had 88 yards rushing as Navy had a total of 257 yards on the ground. The Midshipmen never gave up. A really good win. Navy is now 4 – 3.
Next week Navy travels to Greenville, NC to battle the  East Carolina University Pirates in a 3:30 pm game. The Pirates are 5-3. They beat UAB 42 – 35 yesterday. Another team that likes to pass. Will be a tough challenge for the Midshipmen.
Army (1-6) lost to Eastern Michigan 38 – 48. Air Force (4-3) beat New Mexico 28 – 21.
Navy's Sprint team is 5-0 with a 48 – 7 win over Mansfield Friday night.
