NAVY FOOTBALL 2012. No. 8                                           Observations from an Olde Poolie

October 28, 2012.  Navy 56 nEast Carolina University 28.    On a cool  dreary day where hurricane SANDY produced rain (heavy at times) and swirling winds in Greenville, NC before over 48,000 fans (mostly ECU) Navy's offense came to play grinding out yards on the ground in 5, 10, 20, and 25 bursts.  Blocking primarily by the line but also the others - slotbacks, wide receivers etc - produced 512 yards on the ground. Slots Gee Gee Green and Bo Snelson plus back-ups had big days. ECU could not find a stop. The defense bent but also played well.

Navy kicked off. Forced ECU to punt to Navy's 39. It took 8 running plays and 2:45 minutes with slotback Thomas scoring on a 17 yard run.  Another stop by Navy and a 69 yard drive with FB Copeland scoring.  Navy 14 ECU 0 with four minutes left in the quarter. ECU then put together a 75 yard drive in 12 plays to make it Navy 14 ECU 7 early in the second quarter.  Navy drove to the five yard line then Reynolds pass was intercepted by the Pirates.  Reynolds first turn-over in four games. ECU then put togethr their best drive of the day - 95 yards - to tie the game 14 - 14 with under seven minutes left in the half. Behind freshman Reynolds the Midshipmen used five mimutes and 10 plays as Reynolds scored on a one yard plunge.  Navy 21 ECU 14 at the half.

Navy scored on it's first five posessions  of the second half. 75 yards in ten plays; 28 yards (after covering an ECU fumble) in 4 plays; then 71 yards in nine plays to make it Navy 42 ECU 14 at the end of the third quarter. ECU answered to make it 42 - 21 early in the fourth quarter. The Midshipmen added two more TDs - one on a 20 yard pass to back-up SB Whiteside. Another on an excellent 33 yard run by SB Williams-Jenkins. With nine minutes left in the game Niumatalolo went deep into the depth chart.  QB Trey Miller led onre TD drive. Some new faces got some experience on the defensive team also.  Final score Navy 56 ECU 28.

This was a big win against a favored team on a soaked field in nasty conditions."We worked hard - probably our best week of preparation all season - and it was good to see all that stuff come to fruition." Said Coach Ken Niumatalolo. Navy scored on 8 of it's 11 possessions. The Midshipmen did not punt. They were 3 - 3 on fourth down conversions. They had 512 yards on the ground.  Green had 134; Reynolds 81 and Snelson 67. Reynolds was 3-5 -1 for 51 yards and two TDs.
