XO fired for issues while leading Blue Angels

The Navy fired the No. 2 officer at Naval Base Coronado Friday after allegations arose into his conduct while in command of the Blue Angels.
Capt. Gregory McWherter was relieved by the head of Navy Installations Command, Vice Adm. William French, after reviewing the initial findings into a March 24 complaint alleging misconduct and an inappropriate command climate while he led the Blues from November 2008 to November 2010 and again from May 2011 to November 2012.
Cmdr. Kevin Stephens, spokesman for Naval Air Forces, in San Diego said McWherter had been reassigned to AIRFOR pending the investigation’s outcome. Stephens declined to specify details about the alleged misconduct further while the investigation is ongoing.
McWherter did not return calls seeking comment Friday
McWherter, a graduate of The Citadel, has commanded Strike Fighter Squadron 192, forward deployed with Carrier Air Wing 5 in Atsugi, Japan. During his time as CO, the squadron deployed three times on the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk between June 2007 and July 2008.
McWherter has over 5,500 flight hours and 950 carrier arrested landings, according to his biography, and has received the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and three Strike Flight Air Medals among other awards.
