Death of a Classmate - Charles Bond Chapman III , 11th Co.



CDR Charles Bond Chapman III, SC USN Ret, U.S. Naval Academy Class of 1954, passed away on October 14, 2015, in Scottsdale, AZ after an extended illness, surrounded by his loving family.

Charles was born on March 23, 1931 in Salem, Massachusetts. His family later relocated to Marblehead, MA. Charles joined the US Navy Reserve in 1949 and entered the United States Naval Academy in July 1950 with the Class of 1954. Charles was a member of the 11th Company all four years and was a member of the Plebe crew team and the Varsity team his Second and First Class years (he missed Third Class year due to a broCken leg).

Upon graduation, Charles was commissioned in the Supply Corps and attended the Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, GA.  Over the subsequent 20 years, Charles served in a variety of Supply Corps billets afloat and ashore, including Navy Supply Depot, Guam and the Bureau of Supplies and Accounts in Washington, DC. In 1965, Charles earned a Master of Science in Management Degree from the US Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. Charles also earned a law degree, LLB, from Northern Illinois University.

After his Navy career, Charles held senior positions in Procurement and Contract Administration at Argonne National Laboratories and Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Charles married the former Elizabeth Jean Wallace of Somerville, MA  on April 10, 1955. Charles is survived by Jean and their four children; Charles IV (USNA Class of 1978), Christopher, Holly and Matthew.

Charles' ashes will be inurned in Gig Harbor, Washington in the spring of 2016.
