Death of a Classmate - Lieutenant Colonel Donald P. Bowen, U.S. Marine Corps (retired) - 23rd Co.


Donald Paul Bowen  (November 19, 1931 - April 23, 2017)

 

Lieutenant Colonel Donald P. Bowen, 85, U.S. Marine Corps (retired), died peacefully at Hospice House in Ft. Pierce, FL on Sunday, 23 April 2017, after a lengthy illness.

 

He was a native of Pennsylvania, PA second of the six children of Joseph D. Bowen and Marie F. Bowen.

 

He was a graduate of Roman Catholic High School, the U.S. Naval Academy, George Washington University, and the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School.

 

He served in combat in Vietnam and commanded a Marine Corps jet fighter squadron there in 1970. His combat decorations include the Legion of Merit with "V", the Distinguished Flying Cross, 25 Air Medals, the Navy Commendation Medal, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.

 

After retirement from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1974, he was employed as a Marketing Manager by Sundstrand Aerospace Corporation in Washington, DC, New York City, and in St. Louis, MO. He again retired in 1990 and moved to Ft. Pierce, FL, where he enjoyed scuba diving, boating, and flying.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Gerald L. Bowen, Esq., and Rev. Joseph D. Bowen. His survivors include his wife, Carole A. Bowen, his sons, Gregory S. Bowen and Mark C. Bowen, his daughter Susan L. Nelson, grandson Ryan D. Welsh, and stepdaughter Paige E. Estes. Additionally, he is survived by his brothers John B. Bowen, Paul C. Bowen, and sister Rosemary Wachinski, all residing in the Philadelphia area.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Treasure Coast Hospice, 5000 Dunn Road, Fort Pierce, FL 34981. www.TCHospice.org

 

Services: At his request, Colonel Bowen wished to be cremated and his remains transported to the Arlington National Cemetery for inurnment in the Columbarium. No services are planned.
