John Sherman Manley, a U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel, passed away Tuesday, April 7, 2009, in Fort Worth at the age of 48.
Funeral Mass: 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church,
Colleyville.
Interment: John will be interred in Arlington National Cemetery in a private service at a later date. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 30, in Fort Myers Chapel in Arlington, Va., with a reception at the Fort Myers Officers Club afterward.
Memorials: Donations may be made to the Virginia Military Institute Class of 1983 Scholarship Fund in Jack's name.
Jack, as he was known affectionately to family and friends, was born March 11, 1961, in Quantico, Va. He was the embodiment of strength, faith and character. He was loved and respected by all who knew him. Jack had a profound sense of family and deeply loved his parents, wife, children and siblings. He was wise beyond his years and possessed a tremendous wit. He was a man of great physical stature, athletic prowess, humility and servitude. He was always a source of counsel and comfort to those in need.
Jack was a 1979 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School in Alexandria, Va., and a football team captain. He graduated in 1983 from the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va., with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering and received a commission as a first lieutenant in the United States Air Force. After 10 years of honorable active duty military service, Jack transitioned to civilian life, held various positions with large commercial engineering firms and later started his own small businesses, The Information Union and Manley Services, while he continued to serve his country as an officer in the Air National Guard. After the terror attacks of 9/11, Jack was recalled to active duty and served in a number of challenging positions supporting the Air Force at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Jack moved to Fort Worth in 2005 after accepting a leadership role as the chief, special operations/rescue branch, and chief, personnel recovery, 10th Air Force.
Jack had a tremendous sense of duty to his fellow man, especially for the young soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who were serving in harm's way. This was clearly evident in the many volunteer hours Jack proudly spent working with the United States Organizations in the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. Jack devoted countless hours to help improve the USO's automated tracking and inventory software systems. Jack continued to selflessly volunteer with the USO every Sunday, even while battling his cancer, until he was physically unable.
Jack was predeceased by his father, Thomas Francis Manley, of Scranton, Pa.
Survivors: His wife of over 24 years, Anne Schoeffel Manley; daughters, Emily Anne and Lillian Francis; son, Miles Elliott of Grapevine; mother, Patricia Tucker Manley of Alexandria, Va.; sister, Kathie and husband, Joe Morelli, of Manassas, Va.; brother, Tom and wife, Annette Manley, of Stafford, Va.; brother, Jerry and wife, Cathy Manley, of Centerville, Va.; brother, James of Alexandria, Va.; father- and mother-in-law, Peter and Jane Schoeffel of Jacksonville, Fla.; brother-in-law, Clay Schoeffel and wife, Leslie, of Alexandria, Va.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

We (Thomas Jefferson High School) just had our 30th high school reunion last Saturday (1AUG09) when I learned of Jack passing. He was a true friend and classmate.

He always had that "smile". I will miss him.
