Observations from an Olde Poolie

Nov. 14, 2009. Navy 35 Delaware 18. After four days of rain the skies opened up and the sun came out on the final home game for 32 Navy seniors before over 30,000 fans. The Midshipmen spotted Delaware a 9 - 7 half-time lead then cranked up the offense ih the second half to score four touchdowns anf pull away 35 - 18. QB Dobbs scored all five TDs.

Navy kicked off, held the Blue Hens, then marched 80 yards in 10 plays to take a 7 - 0 lead after 5 minutes, Delawre answered with a good drive and a FG to make it 7 - 3. On their next possession Navy fumbled and Delaware's drive resulted in anather FG. Navy 7 Del. 6. After a Navy punt the Blue Hens drove 70 yards in 18 plays but had to settle for another FG. Delaware 9 Navy 7 at the half.

Navy started the second half with a 64 yard drive in 11 plays to take the lead 14 - 9 (5:48), Delaware answered with a 74 yard drive but, again, settled for a FG. Navy 14 Delaware 12. Then it was a 64 yard drive for Navy 21 - 12. A fumble recovery resulted in another Navy TD. Navy 28 Delaware 12. The Blue Hens finally scored a TD to close to 28 - 18. The Midshipmen responded with a 67 yard drive in 12 plays to close the scoring to 35 - 18.

Navy was outgained by Delaware 370 yards to 320. Navy was 4 - 6 passing for 78 yards and had 320 on the ground. Dobbs carried for 26 times for 100 yards. FB Teich had 57 and SB Curry 44. FB Murray was injured and did not play. A good win against a good team.

This was the last game for 32 seniors = 16 of them are starters or alternates. The Midshipmen finally get a week off to get healthy then travel over Thanksgiving to Hawaii to meet the Warriors. This will be a challenge with jet lag and just making adjustments to the biological clocks for body and mind. Hawaii 6 - 4 is coached by former Navy assistant Greg McMakin. Hopefully the Midshipmen will overcome travel proplems and come back with a "W".

Army beat VMI 22-17 and Air Force beat UNLV 45 - 17.
