Obituary for Katharine (Curry) Ferrer, widow of Kenneth Allen Ferrer

Katharine (Curry) Ferrer, 79, of West Simsbury, loving wife of the late Kenneth Allen Ferrer (Class of 1954), died peacefully on Thursday (September 27, 2012) at McLean Home.
Katharine was born in Washington, DC on February 24, 1933 to the late John Edward (Class of 1923) and Elizabeth (Engs) Curry. She graduated from Duke University with a BS in Political Science and Social Studies, and was a Pi Phi sorority member. After graduation, she moved to San Francisco and began dating “Al” Ferrer. The couple married in 1957 and began their family. Throughout her life, her priorities were her children, parents and siblings.
She volunteered as PTA president, enjoyed DAR membership, was fond of neighbors and delighted in community activities.  She attended community Bible study and was involved with church organizations.  She was an avid reader, a wonderful Bridge and Canasta player often with neighbors, and manager of the home.  She was a cheerful supporter of Duke sports teams.
Katharine, “Mom” to her children, who helped manage all aspects of the household, was a devoted participant in the after school activities and studies of her four children.  Along with her devotion to family, household, friends, and community, she found time to enjoy gardening and, with the hardy approval of Dad, eagerly engaged her children in yard work.
She later went on to spend 18 years as an executive tax preparer for H&R Block.
She is survived by her son, Brad Ferrer and his wife Patty of Atlanta, GA; son, John Ferrer, CAPT. USN, Ret. (Class of 1982) and his wife Bridget of San Diego, CA; daughter, Kathy Zirolli and her husband Dean of Avon; son, Kenneth Ferrer of West Palm Beach, FL; and seven grandchildren, Benjamin and Andrew Ferrer of Atlanta, GA, Matt, Mia and Thomas Ferrer of San Diego, CA and Victoria and Dean Allen Zirolli of Avon; two sisters, Harriet B. Curry of Washington, DC and Libbets Kasner of Little Rock, AR; and a nephew and niece, Buzz and Betsie Kasner.
A Celebration of Katharine’s life will be held on Tuesday, October 2, 10 a.m. at Carlin Chapel at McLean, 75 Great Pond Road, Simsbury. Rev. Thomas J. Furrer will officiate. A reception will immediately follow at the Hartford Room located in the McLean Village’s Burkholder Community Center. Interment, alongside her husband, is planned at the U.S. Naval Academy Columbarium, Annapolis, MD at the convenience of her family.
