Death of a Classmate - Russell Calvin Miller , 20th Co.

Margaretville native Russell Calvin Miller died on Friday, October 14, 2011.
Russ was born in Margaretville on December 24, 1929. He was a 1948 graduate of Margaretville Central School.
A few months later he enlisted in the US Navy and went to boot camp at Great Lakes Training Center, where he had nearly completed Electronics Technical School when he was chosen to go to the Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD; one of the few enlisted men to be chosen to become a Navy officer. He spent his career on a variety of ships, as well as teaching at Annapolis. He retired after more than 20 years, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
He married Joan Cushing in Nova Scotia, Canada early in his career. They had two sons, Timothy and Christopher. He and his wife settled in Springfield, VA after his retirement.
In his retirement he worked in Washington, DC as a computer programmer for Raytheon Corp. working on a Navy contract. Russ used his computer knowledge to do research and genealogy, and visited the Catskills where his ancestors lived. He produced a report on the removal of those people who had been buried in the cemeteries that were moved when the Pepacton Reservoir was built.
A funeral service for Russ will take place on January 31, 2012, at 1 p.m. in the Fort Myer Old Post Chapel, Arlington, VA, with interment in Arlington National Cemetery.
