Van L. Vierbicky, 83, of Weirton, passed away Monday, February 15, 2016, at his home.
He was born August 18, 1932, in Weirton, a son of the late Stanley and Genevieve Obremski Vierbicky.
Van attended the U.S. Naval Academy and served four years as an Air Force pilot. He attained the rank of lieutenant colonel while serving. He also served in the Pennsylvania Air National Guard with a combined total of 23 years of service.
He later attended and received his master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
With 34 years of service, Mr. Vierbicky retired from the Quality Control Department of Weirton Steel. Van was an inventor and, during his employment, he patented two products for Weirton Steel.
He was a member of Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus 3734, the WSX 25-Year Club and the Reserved Officers Association.
Van is survived by his brother, Henry "Hank" Vierbicky; nephew, Keith and Connie Vierbicky and their children, Aaron, Acacia and Gina; niece, Cheryl and Bruce Costello and their children, Jason and Lisa; and several great-nephews and nieces.
In keeping with Van's wishes, a memorial Mass will be scheduled at a later date at the Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church.
